The RYA has a range of courses for motorcruising at sea, with Yachtmaster Offshore as the target for many.
We are planning to offer Yachtmaster courses again at the middle of 2018. Until then we recommend booking with Portsmouth Marine training

A typically progress through the system is:

  • Dayskipper
4 day course, if you have previous experience. Accepted as a boatlicence in many countries. For the Netherlands, you have to apply for an ICC to operate boats up to 24 meter in length.
Topics: Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising

  • Coastal Skipper
5 day course, excluding the theoretical preparation, for longer passages by day and night.
Topics: Passage planning, Preparation for sea, Pilotage, Passage making and ability as skipper, Yacht handling under power, Yacht handling under sail, Adverse weather conditions, Emergency situations

  • Yachtmaster
The first qualification towards the professional and commercial Certificates of Competence. Often asked for certificate for work on megayachts.
Practical examination by an independent examiner. During the exam (about 8 hrs) you have to show the examiner that you are in full control of the boat. Not just manoeuvring, but pilotage, crew communications, distress handling and victualling as well.
Multiple day preparation course, if you have previous (high level) experience.

You can choose from 4 different courses in the RYA Powerboat scheme.
